Witness to Horror : The Ongoing Genocide in Palestine
The Palestinians had been witnessing many ruthless attacks and confiscations by Israel's army, beginning from 1987 until today. The army of Israel is constantly bombing, attacking, and torturing the children, women and old people. They also destroy the hospitals and schools. This shows how the Zionist had been breaching international law by ignoring what is prohibited by the statute. We must realize the seriousness of this concern.
It is one of the longest and most complicated disputes in history. It began in the 20th century when tensions between Arabs and Jews grew. In 1948, the State of Israel was created, leading to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians. This event, called the Nakba or “catastrophe,” started a violent struggle over land, rights, and sovereignty that has deeply affected millions of lives.
In 1967, Israel took control of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War. This led to the building of Israeli settlements in these occupied areas, which are considered illegal under UN rules. The First Intifada and the Second Intifada were protests against Israeli occupation. These uprisings caused many deaths and gained global attention. In recent years, Israeli military actions in Gaza have caused massive destruction for the people living there.
In Gaza, daily survival is fraught with anxiety and fear due to restricted access to essentials like water and electricity. Food and medical supply shortages arise from blockade restrictions, intensifying their hardships. Economic sanctions have led to soaring unemployment rates. Additionally, ongoing violence fosters widespread psychological trauma, with many, especially children, facing PTSD or anxiety due to the persistent instability.
In a TikTok video, a Palestinian girl in north Gaza shares her life before the war, where she had a lunch box full of food. Now, her health is poor, and she loses weight due to hunger. As in the case South Africa v Israel, the allegations was Israel failed to prevent and prosecute incitement genocide.
Genocide involves the deliberate and eradication of a racial, ethnic, national, or religious group through acts such as killing, causing harm, inflicting destructive living conditions, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children. Coined by Raphael Lemkin in 1944, the term was defined and criminalized by the United Nations Convention in 1948 to prevent and punish such atrocities.
In Gaza, there have been accusations of genocidal activities. Human Rights Watch reported Israeli authorities denying Palestinians access to water, leading to deaths from dehydration. Additionally, Israeli airstrikes have targeted residential areas, killing families and destroying homes.
The reactions have been mixed. Many people already raised the alarm the risk of the genocide until now. Certain governments concerned the strategy of warfare of Israel against the besieged population of Gaza. Despite actions from various associations, the decisions of international messages have failed to achieve a ceasefire. Amnesty International has also released a report accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, based on extensive evidence. The failure of the United Nation got criticized, not because it can't, but because it won't.
Media influences public perception of the Israel-Palestine conflict through biased framing, limited access, and coverage differences. Social media offers immediacy but risks misinformation. Reporting can humanize or dehumanize victims and is often swayed by foreign political agendas.
To conclude, the ongoing crisis in Gaza is getting worse. Therefore, we must break the silence and express our solidarity for our brothers and sisters in Palestine that have been suffering over the years, hoping there will be changes in the future. They also deserved the life to live just like we do.
